Best Day Trips from Taipei: Jiufen and Shifen

Looking for a break from the city? The mountains north of Taipei offer two of the most iconic destinations in Taiwan. The best part? You can visit both in one day using public transport.

The "Golden Loop"

We recommend doing them in this order to avoid the worst crowds: Taipei -> Shifen (Morning) -> Jiufen (Afternoon/Evening) -> Taipei.

Stop 1: Shifen (The Lanterns)

Formerly a coal mining town, Shifen is famous for its sky lanterns. Take a TRA train to Ruifang Station, then transfer to the Pingxi Line.

Stop 2: Jiufen (The Old Street)

A mountain town famous for its teahouses and resemblance to "Spirited Away". Try the Taro Balls!
